Skin Cancer Prevention: Tips on Protecting Your Skin from the Sun

Skin cancer is the most common among cancer types in the US. It’s mainly due to the Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. However, it’s also caused by sunlamps or tanning booths. The most dangerous kind is melanoma. Heed these tips from a provider of personal care services in Georgia:

  • Limit your time under the sun between 10 am to 4 pm as this is when the sun’s heat becomes too intense.
  • Even if it’s cloudy outside, use sunscreen.
  • Before going outside, apply at least an ounce of sunscreen every 15 to 30 minutes and a lip balm or lipstick with SPF of at least 30.
  • Senior care services in Conyers, Georgia recommend that you choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that can protect you against both UVA and UVB radiation, is water-resistant and has an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Every after two hours, reapply sunscreen. Home care services suggest that you reapply every hour when swimming or sweating.
  • Be extra careful around sand or water as their surfaces can reflect the damaging rays of the sun, increasing your risk for sunburn.
  • As much as possible, wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, preferably dark as they block the sun more than loose or white fabrics.
  • Use a hat that can shade your face, ears, and neck and a pair of sunglasses with lenses that have 99% to 100% UV absorption.
  • Be cautious of your medications that may make you more vulnerable to the sun. Let experts in skill nursing help you determine which.
